PPA Certification

PPA Certification is available for Photographers, Electronic Imagers, and Artists. Artists are defined as retouchers and specialists, consistent with the specifications for the Master Artist designation.

Attaining PPA Certification is a three step process. First, you must apply for the program. The application fee is one hundred dollars. Applicants are not allowed to register for the exam until PPA Headquarters has received the signed application. You must be an official candidate of the program to begin the process.

The next two steps may be done in any order. You must take the written examination for Certification and submit images for the Certification Review. The process outlined below only applies to the PPA Certified Photographer Credential. Please contact the PPA Service Center for more information on the EI or Artist process.

The examination is approximately seventy questions and may be taken at a state affiliated convention or at any PPA event. You must have applied for the program and register with PPA at least five business days in advance of the examination date. Exams are individually tailored based on the type of photography that the applicant does.

The image review requires photographers to submit twenty images. The images will be judged as a body of work using the standard:

Work that is acceptable to a reasonable consumer.

Please reference the image submission forms in the information packet for specifics on print format and instructions for sending the prints to PPA.

Once the Certifying process has been completed, you will receive a packet containing a certificate, decals... and may begin advertising as a PPA Certified Photographer. You must maintain this designation annually through a nominal maintenance fee and must update their Certification credentials every five years. Re-Certification involves attending continuing education programs on photography and again submitting twenty images for review.

If you have any questions about the Certification program or would like to request the Certification information packet and application, please contact the PPA Service Center at 800-786-6277. You may download the application and get updated information by visiting the PPA web site.
